Founded in 1991 and taken over by the current partners in 2012, Considerate Hoteliers
is a company that helps hospitality businesses reduce their environmental impact.

Boasting extensive experience in providing responsible business analysis and solutions within the hospitality sector, we have so far worked with major forward-thinking clients including The Oetker Collection, The Zetter Group, Edwardian Hotels, The Mustique Company and Royal Garden Hotel. And the list continues to grow, as more and more hotels broaden their business practices to include sustainability.

Our Con-Serve™ data management system has been short-listed for two prestigious awards: an EDIE in the Energy Efficiency Data & Software category; and a Guardian Sustainable Business Award in the Carbon & Energy Management category. It has also been awarded with an ISO 50001 Energy Management System certificate.

Meet Our Team

Benedetta Cassinelli
Partner/Business Development Director

Benedetta has over 18 years’ executive level experience of both online and offline travel markets with in depth understanding of hospitality industry as a whole. At Travelselect.com she looked after the business and corporate strategy and was Head of New Business when Travelselect was acquired by Lastminute.com. She then joined Western Oriental, a luxury tour operator, as Business Development Director where she led the online strategy and development of new revenue streams. She was also involved in the research and acquisition of three small tour operators to be integrated into the Western Oriental then listed on the AIM stock exchange.

After a two-year break dedicating herself to volunteering for Network 4 Africa, Benedetta joined forces with Xenia to advise hotels on bespoke sustainable strategies. This led to them to take over Considerate Hoteliers Association. Benedetta is a Committee Member of Project ICARUS, a GBTA Foundation initiative, the most widely recognized and respected Corporate Sustainability/Corporate Social Responsibility program within the global business travel and meeting industry.

She graduated with a BA Hons in International Business Administration from EBS London, and subsequently gained a Master degree in Policy Studies at City University, London.

Xenia zu Hohenlohe
Partner/Marketing Director

Xenia began her career in the hospitality industry 23 years ago and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the company. She has handled the PR for cultural tourism Spain and international hotel groups such as Mandarin Oriental Hotels and Oberoi Hotels as their European Account Manager. She then spent three years at Amanresorts, first heading Sales & Marketing for The Americas & Europe, then building up the European Sales Office in London before moving into operations as Assistant General Manager for the Amanjena, Marrakech. Having developed a thorough understanding of the various operational as well as commercial aspects of the hotel business, she joined forces with Benedetta to re-brand and re-position Considerate Hoteliers. Xenia is based in our Munich office and is fluent in five European languages, which positions the company perfectly for a European expansion.

Xenia’s motivation is her life-long concern for the environment and desire to create new systems for the integration of sustainable practices into the hospitality industry

She holds a BA in Communications from the CENP in Madrid. Xenia acts as an advisor to The Prince of Wales' Charities' International Sustainability Unit and is a Trustee of the Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth Remembrance Trust - a trust with a deed for agricultural education.

Mark Britton Jones
Commercial Director

Mark brings a professional history that spans some 28 years in hospitality, airlines, travel and tourism. Having worked in the hospitality from early on in his professional life, he brings wealth of experience from front line up to board level. This deep understanding of the industry was further developed after gaining an MBA in Hospitality & Service Industries Management from Glion Institute of Higher Education. Mark has held a number of key leadership roles within the hospitality industry, which include: Vice President Luxury Hotels Group; Senior Director – Hotel Development EMEA WorldHotels; and Director of Sales Preferred Group. These are complemented by a 10-year history covering airlines such as Virgin Atlantic, Air Canada and Air Mauritius.

He is currently conducting Doctoral research with Teesside University into greenwashing in the hotel sector. He is a guest or part-time lecturer at various academic institutions, and continues to offer consulting to independent hotels under Verve Hospitality.

Leyla Basacik
Sustainability Manager

Leyla is responsible for developing Con-Serve, our data management system for the hospitality industry. Her role covers the technical delivery of services as well as client relationship development and management. She has a keen interest in making sustainability data accessible so that it can be used to inform and inspire companies in to make environmentally and socially sound decisions that commercially make sense. Leyla began her career at CDP, formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project, where she worked closely with some of the world’s largest corporates on climate change issues. As Senior Technical Officer, she gained extensive technical knowledge in climate change and professional experience in corporate environmental reporting.

She has a first class BSc degree in Environmental Geography and International Development from the University of East Anglia, and an MSc with High Distinction in Climate Change Adaptation from the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia.

Catherine Baroun
Account & Relationship Director

Catherine brings 18 years’ expertise in sales, marketing and PR within the hospitality sector, teamed with her passion for environmental causes, to the Considerate Hoteliers team. Uniquely, Catherine has experience in both branded and independent hotels; single property and clustered hotels; as well as a three-year stint on the supplier side. She is client centric and fully understands the commercial challenges that hospitality businesses face. Within Considerate Hoteliers, she supports our clients in finding innovative, cost-effective solutions to help them achieve their objectives profitably and responsibly.

She has joined a variety of national and international Earthwatch projects as a citizen scientist, which have mainly focused ocean health and biodiversity. From spending time in the field with scientists over the past 20 years, she has seen, at first hand, the impact of climate change and pollution.

Lucas Stolberg
Engineer/Sustainability Analyst

Lucas uses his expertise and know-how to help deliver a sound technical service as an integral part of the Con-Serve offering in Germany.

After completing an energy engineering apprenticeship and spending a gap year in New Zealand working for Greenpeace he returned to Europe determined to follow his passion for environmental conservation by completing a Master’s degree in the area of Responsible Management at Steinbeis University in Berlin. The focus of his studies was on Corporate Responsibility Management. Consequently, he divided his time between university and an internship with our partner Sustainable AG in Munich, where he specialised in CDP disclosure as well as strategic consultancy. After Lucas finished his MA, he joined Sustec, experts in solutions for lighting management, with whom energy efficiency and resource protection are at the very core of their business proposition. Lucas has recently completed a training for Energy Management with Germany’s certifying body TUV and is now an official Energy Efficiency Agent, allowing him to conduct energy audits.

Diana Princova
Sustainability Analyst

After obtaining her first-class honours degree in management with German, Diana received multiple scholarships that enabled her to pursue her interest in sustainability at the University of Nottingham. Aside from gaining a strong insight into sustainability and its challenges, Diana also led a client facing consulting project for a local care home. She has been awarded a distinction and the Best Performance of the 2016 Class Award for her Master's in Sustainability.

Diana comes from a diverse background of studying and working in Slovakia, Germany, UK and Australia. She brings with her expertise in data analysis, acquired during her eight months' placement in Germany. Diana is responsible for client relationship management, bespoke reporting, and the technical delivery of Con-Serve™, Considerate hoteliers data management system for the hospitality industry.

Joanna Kapatou
Sales Executive

After completing her studies in Hospitality & Tourism in Greece, Joanna was a scholarship student at Le Cordon Bleu London. Working alongside some of the most reputable chefs in Paris and London gave Joanna the chance to enhance all aspects of her culinary knowledge.

Parallel to her studies, she continued working in hotels and private member clubs in London – both back and front of house. Although food is her big passion, Joanna is conscious of the immense waste generated and is committed to driving awareness of this and reducing it. Joanna is the day-to-day contact at the Considerate Hoteliers office for members and clients.

John Rogers
Head of Finance

John is an accountant with considerable experience in the development of financial and operational management in a wide range of consumer facing businesses. He has a particular interest in the successful implementation of new online strategies.

He held key leadership roles at Travelselect.com and Lastminute.com when they were achieving rapid growth of their online travel services.

  • The International Hotel booking site Bookdifferent.com aims at making sustainable travel easy and accessible. They are the first hotel booking site in the world to offer transparency on which  hotels are considered ‘green’. By using a combination of two different indicators, namely a Carbon Footprint rating per hotel and a hotel’s existing eco certifications, BookDifferent provides consumers with the necessary information when looking for sustainable hotels to book. This creates awareness for consumers and increases the number of eco-friendly travellers by offering them a straightforward way to travel green.  Having more consumers looking for sustainable options will drive other hotels follow the suit and will act as an incentive for the sector as a whole.

  • WHOLE WORLD WATER are creating a new way to do business – balancing environmental, economic and societal issues. Hotels and restaurants become members of WHOLE WORLD Water and begin selling high quality filtered water instead of branded bottles. 10% of the proceeds are donated to the WHOLE WORLD Water Fund. 100% of the funds raised through the sale of WHOLE WORLD Water will be invested in clean and safe water projects all over the world.

  • CleanConscience is a not-for-profit organisation offering the UK hotel industry a chance to reduce its environmental impact and save lives. Collected soap is sorted, sterilised, reshaped and distributed to those in need of sanitation. Recovered plastics are baled and sent for recycling. Impact is measured and reported. Join CleanConscience and your hotel can convert tonnes of waste into a meaningful, sustainable programme that will be embraced by employees and admired by guests. Programme fees will be bespoke, based on your establishment's requirements and to suit your budget.

  • The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) is the world’s premier business travel and meetings organisation headquartered in Washington, D.C. area with operations on six continents. GBTA’s 7,000-plus members manage more than $345 billion of global business travel and meetings expenditures annually. GBTA and the GBTA Foundation deliver world-class education, events, research, advocacy and media to a growing global network of more than 28,000 travel professionals and 125,000 active contacts.

  • Project ICARUS, a GBTA Foundation initiative, started in 2006 by the Institute of Travel and Meetings (ITM) in the UK. Since that time it has grown to be the most widely recognised and respected Corporate Sustainability/Corporate Social Responsibility program within the global business travel and meeting industry. This is a project led by and targeted primarily at national and international travel buyers/managers and their suppliers/intermediaries, who wish to integrate sustainability into the way they manage, run and supply travel and meetings programs.

  • Eco-Nomics have been selected by Considerate Hoteliers as our preferred partner for providing energy advisory services to the hotel industry. Eco-Nomics was established to help clients to reduce operating costs, achieve greater energy efficiencies and improve their 'green credentials'. Through taking a holistic approach to energy efficiency, they are able to advise on the best and widest range of measures and technologies to help hotels to make the right decisions. Considerate Hoteliers work in partnership with Eco-Nomics to bring this best in class service to hotels.

  • Slow Food is a global, grassroots movement with thousands of members around the world that links the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment. The aim of Slow Food UK is to seek and promote a better way to eat, celebrating local food traditions and protecting UK’s edible biodiversity.  Considerate Hoteliers and Slow Food UK offer one another mutual support, with Slow Food UK being involved in Considerate Hoteliers’ Annual Awards, setting out criteria and acting as judge for the Slow Food Chef of the Year.  Through this initiative, Slow Food UK and Considerate Hoteliers hope to find a new chef champion to inspire and promote the values of a more sustainable, cleaner and better food in hospitality.

  • Plan Zheroes aims to inspire organisations to become ‘zero food waste heroes’. To help them achieve this goal they have developed an online, interactive map to link up organisations who can donate surplus food with those who really need it. This includes a huge range of charitable organisations working with the estimated 4 million people in the UK suffering from food poverty.

  • The Carbon Trust is a world-leading not-for-profit organisation helping businesses, governments and the public sector to accelerate the move to a sustainable, low carbon economy through resource reduction, energy-saving strategies and commercialising low carbon technologies. Our mission is to tackle climate change by accelerating the move to a sustainable, low carbon economy that delivers jobs and wealth. We can help organisations put sustainability at the heart of their business strategy and gain a competitive advantage in the market. 

  • The Institute of Hospitality, is the professional body for individual managers and aspiring managers working and studying in the hospitality, leisure and tourism industry. The Institute's reputation as a membership organisation promoting quality standards and education spans more than 100 countries. Many CH members are also members of IOH including CH's executive director, John Firrell.

  • WRAP - WRAP is the UK's leading delivery body for resource efficiency.  It was set up in 2000 to help recycling take off in the UK and to create a market for recycled materials. Over the last decade, WRAP has helped and continues to help governments devise strategies to deal with these issues through its expertise, research and practical advice. CH is a supporter of WRAP's Food Waste initiative encouraging hospitality outlets such as hotels to recycle, use less and cut back. Target – zero waste to landfill.

  • Green Traveller feature hundreds of holidays that can be conveniently reached by bike, public transport, train or ferry. GT's aim is to connect sustainable transport with inspiring experiences offered by local tourism businesses to support local economies. A natural partner for CH, together with GTBS, with CH majoring on networking, Green Traveller on marketing and GTBS on accreditation. Singing from the same hymn sheet is an apt description of the relationship.

  • British Hospitality Association (BHA), is the leading representative organisation in the hospitality industry, representing hotels, restaurants and food service providers. BHA aim to deliver real returns for their members, positively championing the industry's priorities through partnerships with government and with other associations and organisations. CH is a member of BHA and a supporter of its stance on sustainability.

  • Zero Carbon World has been working with the Considerate Hoteliers Association to offer members the chance of installing free electric car Charging Stations. Electric vehicles are becoming more and more common thanks to a number of manufacturers moving toward greener plug-in technologies. Getting them donated now, for free, will save money later and will solidify the hotel's position as an innovator through supporting sustainable travel.

  • Sustainable is one of Germany's first Management Consultancies specialising in CSR and environmental issues which a track record dating back to 1992. The services they provide are just as diverse as is their clientele. In practice, their consultancy projects are developed jointly with their clients on the basis of standard modules. They consider the implementation of companies´ responsibility as corporate responsibility, or CR, even if other terms such as corporate social responsibility (CSR), sustainability, environmental management, corporate citizenship and such like are also used from time to time.

  • The Travel Foundation is an independent charity working with the travel industry towards a sustainable future. They do this by working with partners in destination countries on projects that benefit businesses, local communities, the environment and holidaymakers. They turn what they learn into tools, training and business support to encourage industry-wide changes towards sustainable tourism.

  • The International Tourism Partnership (ITP) brings together the world's leading hotel companies to provide a voice and authority on environmental and social responsibility in the industry. The charity demonstrates in a very practical way that environmental and social responsibility makes good business sense. ITP does this by highlighting best practice, offering a range of practical products and programmes and tackling emerging sustainability issues through its collaborative working groups.

  • Green Hotelier is the leading source of information on the sustainable and responsible agenda within the hotel industry. As the key communication tool of the International Tourism Partnership, Green Hotelier has a serious commitment to delivering accessible, expert and honest content. Whether a hotelier looking to 'green' your property, a responsible tourism student, a sustainability commentator or someone simply looking to keep on top of the latest industry news, this free online publication provides heaps of helpful information.

  • The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) is the forum for business leaders in the Travel & Tourism industry. With Chief Executives of some one hundred of the world's leading Travel & Tourism companies as its Members, WTTC has a unique mandate and overview on all matters related to Travel & Tourism.
